Online Homeschooling

How much of a child’s education should be done with online homeschooling? Obviously the amount of time spent teaching kids online has grown drastically in the last 20 years. I’m curious how much of your time is spent on the computer vs. more traditional methods?

  1. It really depends on the child, their needs, and their learning style.

My 13 year old son does all of his schoolwork through online products and software. Even when his work is finished, he uses the internet as a research tool and is always working on a new project (creating databases, learning programming languages, etc).

My 10 year old son uses the computer a bit, but overall he finds it rather frustrating. He is a hands-on learner and needs to touch and manipulate objects in order to understand concepts. Online courses would not be effective for him.

My 7 year old son learns in various ways. He enjoys online activities, but prefers to learn through my teaching and then we use web resources for review and to reinforce concepts. He learns best through multiple methods – auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.

While I am excited about the number of new educational websites and software products that are being developed, I think the most important factor is to consider the way the child learns best!

Jennifer, thank you so much for your wonderful insight. Really great points…I appreciate the post! So true that each child is an individual and we get to let that shine through :)
